Since I have researched much on this Wolter family, and I feel a little confused about what information I have, I think it is time to do a re-start on the research.

Now is known who was Miss Charlotte Wolter, who resided at 2125 S. 40th Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of John and Martha Wolter, immigrants from Germany.  We know that John at one time resided at this address, and it is known where the Wolter family resided for the census years 1900-1940.

Now that research has been done on the “general” Wolter family, it is time to research each individual.

To begin, let’s look at Charlotte Wolter – the person who first piqued my interest.

As we have already seen, Charlotte immigrated to the U. S. from Germany, arriving in New York on the ship, Columbia, on 25 April 1892.  She was 2 years of age at the time.  As shown in various years of the census, Charlotte resided with her parents in 1900 at 692 West 20th Street, in 1910 at 2514 South 41st Court, in 1920 at 2514 South Kedvale Avenue, and 1930 at 4942 Barry Avenue.  All of these residences were in the city of Chicago, IL.  Other information gleaned from these censuses is that she immigrated in 1892, she was a Stenographer (1910, 1920, 1930), and she was Naturalized. By 1940, Charlotte was residing in her own residence at 2311 Lamon Avenue.  She had been residing at this address as early as 1935.  Charlotte may have married John Wagener in Chicago, IL, 12 August 1913.  (1920 census notes Charlotte as Single, 1930 as Single, 1940 as Divorced).

According to FindAGrave.com, Charlotte M. Wolter is buried in Correctionville Cemetery in Correctionville, Woodbury County, Iowa.  According to a photo of the gravestone, she was born in 1889 and died in 1977. The gravestone also states, “sister of Mrs. E. L. McCormick”.  (Find A Grave, database (http://www.findagrave.com : accessed 7 May 2018), memorial page for Charlotte M. Wolter (1889-1977), Find A Grave Memorial no. 32525701, citing Correctionville Cemetery, Correctionville, Woodbury County, Iowa).  According to the website, newspapers.com, the obituary for Charlotte is contained in the 20 March 1977 issue of The Sioux City Journal.  Does anyone have access to this website, or another, so that we can all learn what the obit says?  Thanks!

So, apparently Charlotte moved to Correctionville to be in the same area as her sister.  Maybe the obituary will tell more!

More in my next post.
