Since I have researched much on this Wolter family, and I feel a little confused about what information I have, I think it is time to do a re-start on the research.

Now is known who was Miss Charlotte Wolter, who resided at 2125 S. 40th Avenue in Chicago, Illinois. She was the daughter of John and Martha Wolter, immigrants from Germany.  We know that John at one time resided at this address, and it is known where the Wolter family resided for the census years 1900-1940.

Now is known that the mother of Catherine was Martha Bringe.  Maybe this is why Charlotte was listed in the diary.  Could Martha have been a relative of Albert’s?

Since Martha died between the census years of 1930 and 1940, I looked for her death record.  Maybe this would shed some light on her maiden name and possible relationship to Albert.

Found was the death record of Martha Wolter. (“Illinois, Cook County Deaths, 1878-1994,” database, FamilySearch ( : accessed 1 March 2018), entry for Martha Wolter; citing Cook County Courthouse, Chicago.)

According to the death record, Martha died 28 February 1835 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.  Her address was 4942 Barry Avenue.  She was 69 years of age and married to John Wolter. She was born 28 August 1865 in Hanover, , Germany. Her father’s name was John Bringe, and the informant was Charlotte Wolter. The funeral home was the Wm. C. Smith Funeral Home.  The burial took place at Woodlawn Cemetery in Proviso, , Illinois on 4 March 1935.

I was able to find a copy of her obituary – no source for it though. However, the obituary did not say anything about her maiden name.

More in my next post.
