As a genealogist, I frequently need to transcribe a document. If you do much research, you will be doing much of this too!

When transcribing, make sure that the transcription is exactly as the document reads. The information may not “match up” to other already known information. However, a transcription is: the act or process of making a copy of words that have been spoken or written.

Never change what the source says. It is okay to put comments of differences in your notes. But, never do this in the actual transcription.

Remember, not all records agree!
