If you are at a seemingly “dead-end” in your research, think about the spelling of your ancestor’s last name.

In researching my Bryan ancestors, it has been important to look not only for Bryan, but also Bryant, Brian, Briant, Bryon, Bryont, Brion, Briont, Bryen, Bryent, Brien, and Brient. I have found at least one Bryan ancestor whose last name was spelled one of these ways!

So, be creative in your searching! You never know how the census taker, clerk, or minister spelled that last name!
