If you have been lucky and found your ancestor’s death recorded in the Social Security Death Index, you may have a clue as to where your ancestor lived. The ancestor may not have been found in a location where he had been previously, and you are at a loss as to where he was! If you have found your ancestor in the Social Security Death Index, it may be that finding out the state in which her number was issued will give you the answer.

Kimberly Powell writes a genealogy blog at About.com – http://genealogy.about.com/od/social_security/a/numbers.htm. In her blog, she lists the state codes for the first three numbers of the social security number.

Check out her blog, and check out those social security numbers. You may be surprised about where your ancestor once lived!
