I was recently researching someone who had died in the early 1900’s.  I found their obituary in three newspapers!  Yes, there were two newspapers in the place where he died (one Republican and one Democrat), and one newspaper in the place where he was born.  All three newspapers misspelled his name.  But, none of them in the same way! One had his first name spelled correctly, but incorrectly used his wife’s maiden name for his middle name!  (Further down in the obituary, he married someone with his middle name as the last name.)  Another gave an initial for his middle name, but it was incorrect.  And, another used a nickname instead of his full name.

So, be careful.  Obituaries are one source that needs to have the names checked
