Orlow and Phenie Cordelia Jones Babcock were my great-great grandparents.

Daniel P. Babcock was born 1 February 1818 in Riga, Monroe County, New York. 1  “…When 19 years of age he went to Illinois and lived three years in De Kalb Co. ; then returned to Castile and was married, by Elder Joseph Weeks, April 23, 1843, to Adelia Sturtevant, who was born Oct. 30, 1822, in Castile, N. Y., daughter of Noah and Cynthia Sturtevant, natives of Vermont, who came to Castile before they were married, and lived there till 1867 ; then went to Livingston Co., where Mrs. Sturtevant died Aug. 3, 1875, in the 76th year of her age ;… “2

Noah Sturtevant is found in Castile, Genesee County, New York, in the 1830 Federal Census.3  In his household were 1 male 5-9, 2 males 20-29, 1 male 30-39, 2 females under 5, 1 female 5-9, and 1 female 20-29.

In 1850, Noah Sturdefant is found in Portage, Livingston County, NY.4  As of 11 September 1850, in the household are Noah (age 38, born Massachusetts), Cyntha (age 48, born Vermont), and children Olive and Jane.

In 1860, Noah Sturtevant is found in Portage, Livingston County, NY.5  As of 8 August  1860, in the household are E H Roberts  (age 35, Farmer, born Massachusetts), Jane Roberts (age 23, born New York), the Roberts children Emy J and Arthur, and Noah Sturtevant (age 70, born Massachusetts).  In the next household (dwelling 128), found is Cyntha Sturtevant (age 60, born Vermont) and Emily Wilby (age 8, born New York).6

In 1870, Noah Sturtevant is found in Portage, Livingston County, NY.7  As of July  1870, in the household are Noah Sturtevant  (age 80), Cynthia Sturtevant (age 70), and the Roberts family  – E., Harriet, Alsiva, and Eva.

In 1875, Noah Sturtevant and his wife, Cynthia, are living in Portage, Livingston County, NY.8  As of 1 June 1875, in the household are Noah (age 85) and Cynthia (age 75).

By 1880, Noah Sturtevant had apparently died.  As of 1 June 1880, in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, is Adelia Babcock (daughter of Noah).  In the household is Adelia Babcock (age 58, Keeping House, born New York, father born Massachusetts, mother born Vermont).9

Further investigation has discovered that Harriet Jane Sturdevant, the daughter of Noah and Cynthia, married Ellery Roberts.

So, now we know that Noah was in Castile, Genesee County, New York by 1830.  He and Cynthia were in Livingston County in 1860, 1870, and 1875.  And, daughter Harriet Jane and family were living with them in 1860 and 1870.

This ends this installment of my research on Daniel P. Babcock.  More to follow!
